OpenAI just sent a deprecation notice: the dated GPT-5 snapshots are being shut off in the API. If you pinned one of these, your requests stop working on December 10, 2026.

This is the routine churn of building on a single vendor: models get versioned, deprecated, and retired on someone else's schedule, and you're the one who has to migrate before the deadline. Unless you don't pin a single vendor at all.
If you build on Antbase, this is already handled
Antbase routes through stable aliases, not frozen date stamps. If you call ant:best, ant:auto, or even openai/gpt-5, you're pointed at whatever the best live model is — the deprecated snapshot never enters the picture. And our catalog auto-retires models the moment a provider stops serving them, so a shutoff like this is a non-event: no 4xx storm, no scramble, no code change on your side.
We already pulled the four deprecated snapshots from the routable catalog the day the notice landed. Nothing for you to do.
The real point: you don't have to be locked to one model
A deprecation notice is a good reminder that single-model lock-in is the actual risk — not any one model. Antbase gives you a large roster of frontier models behind one API, so swapping is a string change, not a project. Here's a slice of what's available right now as a GPT-5 replacement, by job:
Frontier general / writing
- •anthropic/claude-opus-4.8 — top-tier reasoning + writing, vision-capable
- •claude-sonnet-4 — fast frontier model, great quality/cost balance
- •gemini — Google's frontier line for long-context and multimodal
- •ant:best — let the router pick the strongest available model per request
Reasoning / hard problems
- •alibaba/qwen3-235b-a22b — large open reasoning model
- •venice/deepseek-r1-671b — DeepSeek R1, strong chain-of-thought
- •minimax/MiniMax-M2.7 — reasoning + vision
- •perplexity/sonar-reasoning-pro — reasoning with live web grounding
- •ant:reasoning — the router's reasoning pool, picks the best thinker
Cheap, fast, or free
- •ant:fast — optimized for latency
- •ant:free — the free-model pool, zero cost
- •Open models from Groq, DeepInfra, Together and more for high-throughput, low-cost workloads
It's OpenAI-compatible — migrating is one line
Antbase speaks the OpenAI Chat Completions API. If your code already uses the OpenAI SDK, you don't rewrite anything — you change the base URL and the model string. Every model above is reachable through the exact same call.
from openai import OpenAI
# Same SDK you already use — just point it at Antbase
client = OpenAI(
base_url="https://antbase.ai/v1",
api_key="ant-...",
)
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
# Was: "gpt-5-2025-08-07" — now pick any of these, no other change:
model="ant:best", # router picks the strongest model
# model="anthropic/claude-opus-4.8", # or pin a specific one
# model="alibaba/qwen3-235b-a22b", # or an open reasoning model
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)That's the whole migration. No deadline pressure, no vendor lock, and if a model gets deprecated again, you change one string — or let ant:best handle it for you.
Try them side by side first
Don't take our word for which model replaces GPT-5 for your workload — compare them. The Antbase playground has Fusion mode: send the same prompt to up to 8 models at once and watch the responses, latency, and cost stream in side by side. Tap a model below to open it in the playground.
Model deprecations will keep coming — from OpenAI and everyone else. The fix isn't to chase each migration; it's to stop pinning your product to a single model in the first place. That's the whole idea behind Antbase.
