Configure Cursor IDE to Use Antbase

Set up Cursor IDE to route AI requests through Antbase for intelligent model selection and cost optimization.

Cursor is arguably the best AI-powered code editor available, but its pricing model creates a dilemma. The free tier gives you limited premium requests, and once those run out, you are either paying for more or downgrading to a weaker model. Power users blow through their premium quota in days. And even on the paid plan, you are locked into Cursor-selected models with no control over which one handles your autocomplete versus your chat versus your Cmd+K edits.

By routing Cursor through Antbase, you break free from that constraint entirely. Every AI feature in Cursor — tab completions, chat, inline edits, code generation — gets routed through Antbase to the optimal model for that specific request type. Tab completions, which need speed above all else, go to fast models with sub-second latency. Complex multi-file edits go to the most capable model available. You get better model selection than Cursor provides natively, with the freedom to use any provider and any model.

The real win is cost predictability. Instead of worrying about premium request quotas, you get fine-grained routing that uses free models for the 90% of requests that do not need GPT-4o. Your Cursor experience stays premium, but your costs drop to a fraction of what the native plans charge for equivalent usage.

Cursor is an AI-first code editor built on VS Code. It supports custom OpenAI-compatible endpoints, which means you can route all Cursor AI features through Antbase for intelligent model routing.

Configuration

Open Cursor settings (Cmd+, or Ctrl+,) and navigate to the AI section. Under OpenAI API Key, enter your Antbase key and override the base URL:

  • •Open Settings > Models
  • •Click "OpenAI API Key" and enter: ant_your-api-key
  • •Set "Override OpenAI Base URL" to: https://antbase.ai/v1
  • •Enable the models you want to use (e.g., auto, gpt-4o)

How It Works

Once configured, Cursor sends all AI requests — tab completions, chat, Cmd+K edits, and code generation — through Antbase. The routing layer picks the best model for each request type. Tab completions use fast models for low latency; complex code generation uses premium models for accuracy.

Tips

  • •Use the "auto" model for most tasks. Cursor sends different prompt patterns for chat vs. edit vs. completion, and Antbase optimizes each one differently.
  • •If tab completion feels slow, you can configure a fast-only model in Cursor for autocomplete while keeping "auto" for chat.
  • •Check the Antbase dashboard to see which models Cursor used — this helps you understand your IDE cost breakdown.
